Ankle sprain frisco

Whether it’s rolling your ankle playing sports or even just twisting it stepping down some stairs, one of the most painful injuries that we treat is an ankle sprain. Frisco patients should take extreme care with a sprained ankle. It is an injury that is often not taken seriously. However, an untreated sprain can cause all sorts of future problems for the joint, including a high risk of reinjury. All that being said, there are some ankle sprains that are less serious than others. In fact, there is a grading system that podiatrists use to classify the seriousness of an ankle sprain. Frisco patients that have any sort of pain, bruising, or instability in their ankle joint after a sprain should call Dr. Verville today at (214) 385-8822. Make sure you also take a  moment to check out some of the incredible Reviews that our patients have left us.

How We Grade An Ankle Sprain

Frisco patients that have rolled their ankle playing basketball or stepped on it wrong coming off a curb should take great care to get it treated. Without proper care, the joint can heal weaker than it was before the sprain. This leaves you open to reinjury.

Regarding the seriousness of the sprain, podiatrists use a grading system to determine how “bad” it is.

  • Grade One – The Grade One sprain is the least serious. In this case, the patient’s ankle ligaments have been stretched, but not torn. There is damage, which is why there will be some swelling, discomfort, stiffness, and maybe even some trouble walking. Patients can expect this sprain to take up to two weeks to heal.
  • Grade Two – The second tier of ankle sprains involves a slight tear in the ligaments. This means that the pain level will be much higher and it will also include swelling, stiffness, and even some bruising. A Grade Two sprain will often require nearly two months to heal.
  • Grade Three – A Grade Three is the most severe ankle sprain. Patients should expect this injury to take a full two to three months to heal because the ligament will actually tear completely. This injury produces severe pain at the moment of the injury but the pain goes away afterwards. Patients should see lots of bruising and swelling in this case. Patients will also lose a significant amount of stability in the joint.
