Plano podiatristStill deemed as a physical impairment for military service, flat feet, or fallen arches, is a condition where the arches of your feet are flatter than usual. These arches do not exist when we are infants, but develop when we begin walking. Frisco patients with flat feet either did not develop arches during childhood or have flattened their arches through normal wear and tear.

Symptoms of Flat Feet

While flat feet are normally painless, some people do experience heel, ankle, or arch pain over time. This pain can worsen with increased activity and cause extreme discomfort. Having one or more of the following problems increases your risk for flat feet:

  • Obesity
  • Injured feet or ankles
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes

Frisco patients with flat feet are also predisposed to misaligned knees and ankles, which may limit walking or cause problems with knees, lower legs, hips, or lower back.

When Do Flat Feet Need Treatment?

Most Frisco patients diagnosed with flat feet have no symptoms. Treatment is only required if you notice:

  • Pain even when arches are supported.
  • Stiffness.
  • Numbness.
  • Weakness.
  • Further flattening of your feet.

During a consultation Dr. Verville will gauge the extent of your problem and determine recommendations and a course of treatment.

Physical Therapy

Frisco patients who have flat feet related to an Achilles tendon injury can get advice from Dr. Verville and a physical therapist who specializes in foot problems. The physical therapist will show you specific stretches that you can perform at home to strengthen your Achilles tendon.

Improved Technique for Working Out

Once deemed as an impossible feat, runners who have flat feet can benefit from visiting a foot doctor for advice on technique. Dr. Verville can evaluate the biomechanics of running and suggest modifying the placement of your feet to reduce discomfort and enhance your performance.
