It is normal to feel nervous before visiting the podiatrist, but knowing what to expect can help you feel calmer and more confident. Understanding the general process and types of questions that may be asked can ease your mind. It can also enable you to better prepare for your appointment, such as gathering information about your health history or writing down questions that you want to cover.

What To Expect During Your First Podiatrist Visit

Your first visit appointment with Dr. Verville creates a solid foundation, allowing her to get to know you and your concerns. It is important to be honest and open so any issues can be properly addressed.

Key Steps During Your First Visit

  • A review of your health history. While the doctor may have your medical records, it is also important to fill in any gaps and discuss what brought you to the office. Has anything changed regarding your health since your last visit with a provider? Do you have any chronic conditions that may impact your foot health, such as diabetes or an immune disorder? What symptoms led you to make an appointment with the podiatrist?
  • A physical examination. Dr. Verville will conduct a thorough examination of your feet to determine the source of your concern as well as any other podiatric issues that may be present. She will look at the overall appearance of your feet to note any irregularities or deformities. In addition, physical manipulation is used to check the muscles, tendons, and joints. In some cases, imaging, such as an x-ray, may be used to see the anatomy of your foot and look for any breaks, masses, or other issues.
  • A treatment plan. Once the podiatrist has reviewed your medical history, current health and symptoms, and physical examination, a treatment plan is developed. This may include procedures performed in the office or instructions for you to follow at home in terms of rest, exercise, medication, or lifestyle modifications to improve the health and comfort of your feet. Any follow-up appointments to monitor treatment progress or adjust your care plan will also be scheduled.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if there is something that you do not understand or want further clarification about. If you experience pain during the physical examination, please inform Dr. Verville so she can provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. If you are concerned about being able to follow certain instructions, let the doctor know so that they can work with you to find a solution.
