Flat feet usually affect both feet, but in some cases only one foot is flat. This disorder has a diverse range of symptoms and varying degrees of deformity and disability. All cases of flat feet are the result of a collapsed arch that causes your entire foot to lay flat when standing. In some cases, flat feet can cause problems with the alignment of your feet, ankles, and legs when it forces them to turn inward. This can hinder mobility and range of motion.

Causes of Flat Feet

Many times flat feet are caused when the arches of your foot don’t develop properly during childhood. In fact, flat feet are common in infants and toddlers because the foot’s arch is undeveloped. Over time some children outgrow this problem while others do not. In other cases, flat feet can be caused by the arch falling over time due to age or strain on your foot and ankle.

Symptoms of a Flat Foot

Although there are many people in Frisco who suffer from flat foot, not all have symptoms. However, some people experience:

  • Foot pain in the arch or ankle area of the foot.
  • Difficulty stretching and standing on the toes or tiptoes.
  • Swelling and tenderness along the inside of the ankle.
  • Flaky, dry, or waxy skin.

Early detection is a critical part of stopping the problem before it grows. If you show any signs of a flat foot, visit Board Certified Dr. Verville at her Frisco office for a comprehensive exam.

Treatment Options for Flat Feet (Flatfoot)

Options for treatment may vary based on the length of time and the severity of pain your flat feet are causing. While treatment will vary from person to person, flat feet are commonly treated by:

  • Changing shoes to improve comfort.
  • Using shoe supports and inserts.
  • Padding and taping your foot to alleviate pressure and pain.
  • Taking medication to help control pain
  • Prescription orthotic devices to help with mobility.

Stretching exercises may be recommended to help stretch the Achilles tendon. Depending on the severity of your flat feet you may require surgical treatment to fully treat your condition.
